Applications for residence permits in the territory of the Czech Republic can only be submitted in person1.
In general, this applies to the following types of applications:
Third-country nationals:
- Long-term visa
- Extension of a long-term visa for the purpose of tolerated stay
- Long-term residence permit
- Long-term residence permit for a different purpose (change of purpose)
- Permanent residence permit
EU citizens and their family members:
- Temporary residence permit for an EU citizen’s family member
- Permanent residence permit for an EU citizen’s family member
- Permanent residence permit for an EU citizen
Applications for these types of residence permits are generally submitted in person at the Ministry of the Interior’s Department for Asylum and Migration Policy. Applications for long-term visa, long-term residence permits, or permanent residence permits may also be submitted at Czech Republic’s diplomatic missions abroad.
If you fail to submit the application in person, the administrative procedure will not be initiated.
If the applicant is younger than 15 years of age, the application must be submitted by their legal guardian (typically one of the parents).
You can find more information about how and where to apply on the pages dedicated to each type of residence permit. If you are unsure which type of residence you can apply for, try using our residence permit guide.
